Pervasive Computing

En anglais
ubiquitous computing , ubicomputing, pervasive computing, smart-its

Disappearing Computer

The mission of the initiative is to see how information technology can be diffused into everyday objects and settings, and to see how this can lead to new ways of supporting and enhancing people's lives that go above and beyond what is possible with the computer today.

Specifically, the initiative focuses on three-interlinked objectives:

  • Create information artefacts based on new software and hardware architectures that are integrated into everyday objects.
  • Look at how collections of artefacts can act together, so as to produce new behaviour and new functionality.
  • Investigate the new approaches for designing for collections of artefacts in everyday settings, and how to ensure that people's experience in these new environments is coherent and engaging.

The initiative addresses these three objectives with a number of independent research projects and a number of support activities run by a network made up of a representation of all project partners.

The Disappearing Computer steering group and the University of the Aegean Co-organize the plenary session Design Education in the time of the Disappearing Computer

Aims and Scope

The session is targeted to provide and discuss the leading visions on how to approach design education, as the field is entering the age of the Disappearing Computer. Designers, essentially involved in the multidisciplinary teams that define Ambient and Disappearing Computer systems, are increasingly called upon to have a mixture of skills. Design in itself cannot be defined as a science, nevertheless more and more scientific approaches are needed in the practice. Current design education needs to be constantly alert and reshaping, in order to provide individuals with extended design skills that combine inspiration and design proficiency as well as good comprehension of engineering, human sciences, and performance arts.

In a ubiquitous computing environment the new intelligence is extelligence, "knowledge and tools that are outside people's heads" (Stewart and Cohen, 1997)

For instance, the terms ‘cut and paste’ come from the fact that the Star was based on ethnographic studies of book publishers, who would sit with long sheets of paper and use big scissors to cut paper and then paste it into other documents. And we still do that today, because of how book publishers worked in the 1970s.

L'article souligne également l'importance de concevoir du 'réalisable' ou au moins 'prototypable', et expérimentable en conditions réelles.

Ambient Intelligence refers to electronic environments, that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. It can be defined as the merger of two important visions: "ubiquitous computing" and "social user interfaces".
