(en)Communiting theorizes that if a product, idea, or service delivers value to a community that is passionate about it, that the community will in turn increase original value/return more value to the market. From the Communiting site:

(en)Call it marketing 2.0 if you want. If your project delivers value to a community of passionate individuals, be it through a product, a service, or content, it's likely that this community will increase original value and deliver in turn more value to the market. There can be more than one node before it reaches a market. Communiting is the art of managing value creation through nodes by favoring accumulation and multiplication and reducing dissipation. It's also the art of managing value spinoff.

(en)It's about ways of a project being a community and a community being a project, the same way the engineering department and the marketing department are part of the same company. It's about understanding and enhancing these practices so that you can pass them on through all the nodes in your networked value chain, empowering every node to do the same. It's you being aware of, and taking the most, of all inputs and outputs and being on the hunt for those that were once chaotic -- that you never saw coming but should, simply because you were there. It's you learning and merging such practices quickly into your primary and secondary activities, from the way you do research and development to the way you buy and sell, through the way you approach compensation and product design. You can make it work upstream with your providers, who will see you as a node, and downstream with your users, clients and customers. It can be used flatly, for every person and activity in your organization or team can be seen as a node.

(en)There are tools and best-practices, references -- even some theories, from a vast array of fields and disciplines. More importantly, there's a lot of discussion and idea shaking that you might need help decrypting before you dive into it. It's art because it's more about styles and ways to attain an objective than absolutism or universality; it's about talent and feelings, whereas you could hope for recipes and science.

(en)If communiting needs a manifesto, may this serve as a draft, a definition and a map.

(en)Communiting is not a revolution. It's not even an evolution. It's a word that might eventually become a tag and eventually become a node. Communiting has its own tags, requirements and influencers. And in case you're wondering, communiting practitioners might as well be called communers. Because it's all about people, passion and the teams that make it happen. Artists and esprit.

Discussion

Communiting is a great "meme" to spread the development of the idea of value networks . I have been interested in similar ideas as collaborative international business models. I suppose they could be called Open Value Networks?.

I am mixed about the concept of the value chain. From what I can tell, value chains become non-linear in value networks. For Open Value Network? models, I imagine inclusiveness. What that means is that there is a way to give people who are interested roles in the network that help them be part of accomplishing the overall increasing of value.

Think of open projects that create software as an example, like Debian, that make room for the inclusion of people with a range of skills, from professional-expert to beginner. If Communiting is intended to be a more Open Value Network?, then Communiting could create inclusive models like this for Communiting projects. Bringing in people with a range of experience and expertise when possible increases diversity, and increases enthusiasm about the service, product or idea.

Creating ways to measure performance of the networks (beyond money) will be an important component of Communiting. Ways to measure Intellectual Capital, tacit knowledge, and to measure the performance of networks (Social Network Analysis). Plus, tools FOR the community to take advantage of network connections, and to help know who has expertise, and who is working on what.

So, you could imagine a Communiting site that contains:

  • A social networking platform, like ELGG, that allows people to network around objects (like areas of expertise, shared interests) instead of just "connections". This is done through community tags.
  • A Wiki Net, a system that connects wiki project spaces, so that it is easy for the entire community to link to, and work on, and incorporate existing knowledge, instead of replicating. Wiki Net makes it easier to mesh knowledge together, while still allowing each person to grow their own Project spaces individually, or to quickly create a new project space for a new collaboration. All can be automatically inter-linked in different intuitive ways
  • An identity and reputation system. OpenID and Karma Initiative beign good candidates.

The Communiting "site" could also have ways programmed into it to measure the Intellectual Capital of individuals and the whole network. -- Sam Rose

Thanks Sam. Nice insight. Not sure about the draft translation. But communauting could easily be integrated in our Bar Camp Bank Wiki Think Tank. Cool to hear you. Maybe we could join Ori Pekelman?, Alexandre Solleiro, Arnaud Fontaine and any other French Geeks to help on your communiting technical aspects. Help needed for translation. -- Christophe Ducamp

My point of view regarding the value chain is that it could be used as an individual tool, as in "the individual value chain". If you have M. Porter's representation of the Value Chain in mind, you can easily imagine someone representing oneself. I consider the Value Chain to be in fact a tool for managing value creation rather than a "mere" visualization or representation tool of an industrial organization's activities. I think that Value Networks are the macro-representation of many value-chains. In fact, imagine that the thin line separating the support activities from the primary activities was in fact the incarnation of your vision, culture and aim (as an individual or organization, for tha matter). The thicker the line, the more perimeter you can cover in the arrow's tip, meaning you benefit more from the outputs of your value chain. Same is true for the inputs, of course. This line is in fact the representation of how well you align your support activities (typically, for a company, information systems, accounting, human resources, etc.) with your operations (provisioning, production, marketing, sales, etc.).

On the rest, I totally agree with your points and I'm glad you've so simply and brilliantly expressed what's been spinning in my mind for a few years now: such models (Open Value Networks) and tools (OpenID, Karma Initiative, Wiki Net) can totally allow the measurement of value creation because you can trace every input and output, especially those that were once "chaotic" (as in "you didn't see them coming and didn't have a clear process to measure and consider them, so they were beneficial to others but not to you").

Thank you very much Sam, we'll be following up on this during the next few days, mainly regarding Open Value Networks and a Communiting.net site (I wish communiting.org to be a learning zone). -- Alexandre Solleiro

Thank you, Alexandre. Value Chain does make more sense from an individual perspective. Of course, as you have probably already thought yourself, some of the Karma Intitiative? "Karma bricks" could be designed towards giving individuals different metrics that they can use to look at their inputs and outputs.

This Value Chain? and Open Value Networks? also brings to mind Stuart Kauffman's Patch Theory? idea from his book At Home in the Universe (see: http://www.mgtaylor.com/mgtaylor/jotm/winter97/webrules.htm and http://www.strategy-business.com/press/16635507/15099). I'll come back later today and try to talk more about Patch Theory?, and how I think it can inform Open Valuenetworks? and Value Chain? models. -- Sam Rose
